Katarina Witt started to ice skate at the age 5 years. Her talent soon began to emerge and she was accepted to Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. There she met their teacher Jutta M ller. Her breakthrough year was in 1982 when she came second at the World Championships in Copenhagen. Since then, Witt's elegance and grace have caught all the attention of people. Olympic triumph at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' gold medal in figure skating after a close-fought competition. Four years later, the event, she was able to claim an additional competitive race. Her free skate was not a success, however her gold medal came from the performance she put during both compulsory figures (short program) as well as the mandatory figures. Witt is the only time a repeat medalist in figure skating for women in the sport since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame After enjoying great success in the field of acting, Witt returned to the sport to compete at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted the crowd despite not winning an award. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in 1995.
